I know the summer season is winding down for the Cape, but the off-season has become very popular with travelers to Cape Cod. Most restaurants, hotels and attractions stay open at least till mid-October. Although off-season rates do not seem as discounted as before, they are generally still quite attractive. In fact, my husband and I are traveling up there in late September for a week or two. I will be coming back with more reviews, tips and travel info to add to my website, so I hope you'll check it out.

Check out this article about off-season travel on Cape Cod.

The Everything Cape Cod Specialties Store is finally open!

For some neat Cape Cod inspired items, I hope you'll visit my store. But, if you have not tried off-season travel on the Cape, I highly recommend it. In-season runs from about June 17th - Labor Day. Especially good off-season times to visit Cape Cod are mid-May to mid-June and mid-september to mid-October. During those times, most Cape Cod hotels, restaurants and shops are still open and the weather is generally comfortable, though probably not warm enough for ocean swimming.

I couldn't even relate to being handicapped and trying to maneuver around everyday obstacles, until my Mom became dependent on a walker and later a wheelchair. I quickly became aware of how difficult it was for her to even move around her own home, and when she had to go out to a doctor's appointment or a store, we met all sorts of challenges. I've never had to deal with being a handicapped traveler either, but I realize that it must be really challenging to be able to travel comfortably and confidently if you must deal with a wheelchair or walker, or have limited agility. When it comes to vacationing, the obstacles must seem insurmountable at times. I'm betting that lots of people don't take vacations because it can be too unpredictible to know what they will face for obstacles. On Cape Cod, there are many handicapped accessible hotels, beaches, restaurants, museums, theaters and other attractions. But, because many of the facilities on the Cape are old, they often do not meet the current standards of the ADA. Even a hotel room labeled "handicap accessible" may not have a bathroom that can handle a walker, never mind a wheelchair. And, interestingly enough, most lodging did not even list their facility as handicap accessible even if they had an appropriate room or two. Many of the beaches on the Cape now have "surf chairs" that are available specifically for the handicapped. The chairs have big tires that can be easily pushed through sand and into the water. You can find handicap travel resources such as lodging, beaches, trails and things to do on Cape Cod that will allow you to have a satisying and safe trip. I hope this will help you have the confidence to consider a Cape Cod vacation.

There are tons of neat things to do on Cape Cod that bring you closer to nature and wildlife. There are many trails on the Cape that bring you right into the heart of it all. Boardwalks along many of these trails span marshes and offer up-close-and-personal views of ocean creatures and eco-systems that are unique to the Cape. These offer great outings for people of all ages, and many of them are handicap-friendly, too. On our last trip to the Cape we walked the Fort Hill trail in the Cape Cod National Seashore out in Eastham. It is about 1.5 miles of fairly easy walking that brings you alongside marshes with pretty views of the ocean, too. On our walk, we came across kids having a great time looking for crabs and fish in areas where the path came along inlets. The paths are pretty easy to follow, yet you still feel like you are in a natural, unspoiled area. Driving around the Cape can be challenging during these 2 months, so that's when it's especially nice to be at a location where you have pools or ocean or activities available on-site or close by. "Early bird" dinner specials at restaurants are also a way to beat the dinner crowd. Not only will you save money, but you will probably be done and out before the restaurants get crazy. Eating out with children might also benefit from the "early bird" opportunities. The kids get fed without the long wait in line to get them cranky or antsy. Your food will probably be served faster, too. We have found that, when it's just us adults, we like to eat after 8PM. The crowds have lessened and there are not as many children around, and sometimes that is important to us.

Lobster! I think I could eat it twice a day for a month and not get tired of it! And if you throw in some New England clam chowder (the white, creamy kind - is there any other!!??) and a few steamers.... m-m-m-m-mmmm - well I think they call that H-E-A-V-E-N!
Being a purist, my favorite is boiled lobster served with melted butter, but I also recommend trying baked stuffed lobster, too. It is usually prepared by taking some of the cooked lobster meat from the tail and preparing a stuffing that is lightly seasoned so as not to lose any of the delicate lobster flavor. The lobster body is than stuffed and served with melted butter. You can still find more meat in the claws and legs to go along with the stuffing.
A trip to New England or Cape Cod is not complete without experiencing this regional treat!

There's nothing like a great photo to help bring back sweet memories about any place you love. Some great Cape Cod photos and a link to an awesome website that can give you a taste of the natural beauty, the history and the unique charm that is Cape Cod, can be found at Everything Cape Cod. I hope to get up to the Cape in October to take more of my own pictures, which I will add here and on my Cape Cod website.

Here is a photo taken from a trip in the early fall of 2004 with my friend Sally. It is the harbor at the Chatham Fishing Pier. Chatham, being at the elbow of the Cape, is the "first stop of the east wind" in the United States.

I love Cape Cod! It is my absolute favorite place on the earth!

Some random thoughts about Cape Cod -
- when I first go over the canal to start my vacation I have this momentary feeling of being transported back in time. Remember - I said momentary - I don't live in the past - yet! :)
- my favorite towns as an adult are Chatham and Falmouth
- my favorite restaurant for fried clams is Kreme n' Cone in Chatham (they also have a fantastic char-grilled burger, the best I have ever had)
- I always love to browse Oak Bluffs on Martha's Vineyard - don't miss the gingerbread cottages on the Methodist Campground property - ask directions as it's easy to miss
- we still laugh (kind of) about the time we went bowling and the guy checked outside first to see if it was raining (it was). He than raised the prices. :0
- my friend and I were on the boat to the Vineyard and we asked God to give us a "delight". Within a few minutes we saw this really cool sea turtle just lazily swimming next to our boat. :)
